Classical drawing workshop

A voyage of discovery of the Renaissance

Classical drawing workshop

Classical Drawing techniques

Our classical drawing workshop provides two options:

  • option A, drawing and sketching fundamentals for novices;
  • option B, drawing and sketching techniques for advanced.

Option A. Drawing and sketching for novices. Participants who start from scratch will get acquainted both with graphite and with charcoal mediums by studying the fundamentals of anatomy. They will practice drawing proportions both of a body/face and of an object on a paper sheet. For this purpose, students will also educate their eyes with cast drawing, which is an outstanding exercise that teaches learners to transfer three-dimension forms to the paper sheet. Students will then focus on the effect of light and shade (“the chiaroscuro”) on objects as well as on gradations and nuances on still lives. Copies of classical drawings will be available throughout the workshop.

Option B is a a full immersion in the ancient technique of sanguine (or red chalk) and charcoal, a voyage of discovery of the renaissance drawing, from Botticelli to Leonardo, from Michelangelo to Raffaello. The more skilled students will  have the opportunity to acquire this traditional technique and perfect it at their best, by polishing their style and experimenting the potentialities of this long-established art. During their 5-day workshop students can also decide to approach:

  • the “trois crayons” technique (“three chalks” in English) which enables the artist to draw by using three different colors of chalk: red, black, and white;
  • the ancient silver point technique, which was used by several old masters such as Leonardo, Raphael and Dürer.

The lessons will be integrated with brief conversations on art history.

Each option includes one session of life drawing with a living model.

Classes are held both in Italian and in English.

This workshop is available every Monday all year round
