I had a fantastic day in an art studio in Florence today. It’s been so long for me since I painted (over 3 weeks) so it felt good. Also to be instructed by another person and amongst other artists was so fun. I did a head of Michelangelo from a photo I took yesterday at the Galleria dell’Accademia. I did a pencil sketch first the switched to canvas board where I started with pencil, then used oil pastes, then acrylic paint. I tried to keep the contrast strong, using a complementary colour scheme of reds and greens. I overlayed my acrylic paint with oil pastels again, and tried my hand at palette knives (a tricky technique) then fixed those mistakes as best as I could with a brush. Then I was out of time! The quick time frame was an intinteresting constraint that taught me to be quick, intuitive and bold. Can’t wait to try more paintings like this when get home!
